Things to do

Although some way off the more well-trodden tourist parts of Tuscany there are still plenty of things to do and see whilst staying at La Mandria.

History. The Lunigiana area is dotted with small hill towns, villages and hamlets with traditional stone built houses, churches and a number of castles dating from the times when feuds and wars were common. In earlier times it was home to Etruscans and the stalwart Luni tribe, renowned for resisting the might of The Roman Empire.

Fivizzano itself was under the control of Florence during the time of the Medici family and was an important centre in the early development of printing in Italy.  There are a number of museums celebrating the history of the area within easy reach.

Sightseeing. The hills of Lunigiana, set against the backdrop of the Apuane and Apennine mountains, offer plenty of scope for exploring. There is relatively little traffic on the country roads so they are popular with cyclists and there is range of routes to suit intrepid walkers or those who just like to stroll through the vineyards and olive groves.

A little further away is the coast with The Gulf of Poets and the Cinqe Terre, easily accessible by boat from La Spezia, and to the south are the marble caves of Carrara.

Train travel is not expensive in Italy and some of our guests prefer to leave the car at Aulla station and explore from there, including the scenic route down through the Garfagnana valley to Lucca and Pisa.

Festivals. Throughout the summer months there are numerous markets, fairs and festivals in different locations around the area. This being Italy, food and wine, particularly local produce and specialities take pride of place together with arts and crafts and several have a medieval theme.

Art projects. As Paul is frequently involved in creative projects, both his own and with local children, his studio is quite well stocked with art materials for drawing, painting, collage, puppet making etc. He is happy to offer these facilities to any guests, either young or ‘young at heart’, who like to spend some time in creative activities whilst on holiday, and will offer advice or support if necessary.

Nature. The wide variety of habitats in the area, combined with the lack of intensive agriculture and associated use of chemicals means that there is abundant wildlife.  We are still constantly amazed at the biodiversity that thrives around us at La Mandria and are grateful to be part of it.

Many children that stay here are particularly fascinated by the wealth of butterflies and other insect life, but there are also birds, animals and wild flowers to spot and enjoy.

Being blessed with little light pollution we also enjoy clear nights of star filled skies and other times when the landscape is bathed in brilliant moonlight.

For more information read the wildlife section.

Relaxing. There are several pleasant beaches and towns along the Riviera di Levante for a day trip to the seaside, numerous bars for a cold drink or ice cream, plenty of shady spots for a leisurely picnic and of course there are always the sun loungers by the pool at La Mandria.
